A very interesting week at Wentworth in more ways than one.  For once, the major talking point was not the players, but the course... or at least Ernie Els’s re-vamp of The Burma Road.

Seems like everybody had their say, but none more so than Wentworth owner, Mr. Richard Caring.  The 18th hole, with its raised green and water feature, was always going to be a major focus.   But there was so much to do that the owner finally had to admit that he was wrong in over-ruling the architect’s desires for the hole.

So next year will see a slight change with the putting surface being lowered to about the level of the railways sleepers.   With one or two other tweaks here and there, there is no reason to believe that the West Course will be anything other than a delight to play on and a joy to behold.

The changes certainly haven’t done Lee Westwood any harm.   Wentworth might not have been his favourite course, but a top 10 there after thinking he might miss the cut was a major positive.

Congratulations go to Simon Khan for coming back from adversity with an almighty bang while commiserations to Chris Wood for learning another invaluable lesson at the start of his professional career.

It was to his credit that Chris started the last round in the lead and no disgrace that he fell away during a concluding 18 holes.  He will benefit from the experience and come back stronger.

That thought can also be placed alongside the name of Simon Wakefield, who lost his Tour playing privileges last season and is now clawing his way back in the environs of the Challenge Tour.   A top 10 in Italy at the weekend will boost his confidence no end.

On the cricket front, don’t be surprised if you start hearing more and more about Glamorgan all-rounder Jim Allenby.  So much so that I believe he will be being talked about in England circles this summer.

Looks like we will be having a very sunny summer on all fronts.
