Dyson Hoovers Up Again In Holland

It was the 31-year-old’s first success since last claiming the title and one I expect him to build on this time and realise all the potential he has shown in the past

Few can compare to Simon Dyson when it comes to play-offs as Peter Lawrie and Peter Hedblom found in Holland.

The Yorkshireman created history to beat his opponents at the KLM Open in Holland – sinking an 18ft birdie putt at the first extra hole, just as he had four years ago when beating Richard Green to the title.

Simon never gives in and came back from an incredible six strokes behind Hedblom to post a course record equalling 63 and force his way into the play-off before picking up a career-high cheque of E300,000.

It was the 31-year-old’s first success since last claiming the title and one I expect him to build on this time and realise all the potential he has shown in the past.

And what a sterling title defence by Darren Clarke, who saw two birdie putts in the closing holes hang on the lip to deny him a spot in the play-off.  Nevertheless, his fifth place finish will give him further confidence for a strong finish to the season.

Well done too to Andrew Coltart and Michael Lorenzo-Vera who posted top 20 finishes to give them hope in the search for playing rights for next season.

Finally, a fond farewell to Test cricket to Andrew Flintoff, who signed off with back-to-back home Ashes triumphs.   It wasn’t quite the personal fairytale ending everybody hoped for, but the ovation Fred received showed just how deep he remains in the public’s affections.

Hopefully he will be back soon from further knee surgery to pick up his career in the one-day and 20-20 formats for many years to come.

Thanks for all the memories Fred.
