The season’s final Major did not quite have the happy ending we were looking for, but what a run we have had this season in the grand slam events.
I was so hoping that Lee Westwood would finish everything off by claiming his first major and completing the ISM slam at the Atlanta Athletic Club, but his putter was not as hot as the Georgia weather although he still posted another top 10.
Tee to green, Lee has no peer and once he gets the bit of luck with the putter he deserves, then that elusive first Major will be his to claim. I am very confident that he will do it in 2012.
Four of our 10 representatives made it through to the weekend although Rory McIlroy had to play in pain after damaging tendons in his right wrist when he hit a tree root only a few holes into his challenge. It is a testimony to his desire and resilience that he made it through all four rounds.
Charl Schwartzel once again indicated just how big a major player he is going to become. He just loves the competition and 12th place was no less than he deserved. Watch for a big 2012 from him.
Simon Dyson completed our quartet and was up with the pace for the first two rounds - sliding at the weekend, but understandably so following all the change of plans his win in Ireland forced. You can put Simon down to have a presence more often in the majors from now on and I particularly expect him to have a very good Open next year.
