Our best hand after an intriguing start to The Open was a prile of sixes.
Simon Dyson was joined by Darren Clarke and Fredrik Andersson Hed on two under par which was good enough for a tie for sixth place – three behind two Toms, Denmark's Bjorn and English amateur Lewis.
It was almost predictable really because Simon is a links course specialist, Darren played much of his amateur career on them and Fredrik came into this week on the back of a fantastic 62.Horses for courses I’d say.
There is quite a gap to our next representatives because Rory McIlroy started his first competitive round since his stunning US Open success with a one over 71.
It proved a popular score because world number two Lee Westwood and US Masters champion Charl Schwartzel also brought us another prile although, at tied 51, not what they were looking for to open The Open.
Close behind came defending champion Louis Oosthuizen alongside mentor and former winner Ernie Els, who will be looking to improve on their opening 72’s.
If the wind blows at it is expected to on Friday then the first round afternoon starters will definitely have had the better of the draw.
It will be very interesting to see how it all develops, but my gut feeling is still very positive about adding to our major championship haul.
