Horsey By A Neck

It was quite fitting after a wonderful week at Cheltenham, that I should follow it with a huge pat on the back for our very own Horsey – Dave Horsey to be exact, winner of the Trophy Hassan II in Morocco.

There were more ups and downs in Dave’s final round than all the jumpers in the Gold Cup experienced the previous week, but he eventually finished first past the post.

Dave was barely into his final round when he holed in one; established a lead and then approached the last two shots clear of South Africa’s Jaco Van Zyl and just one ahead of Welshman Rhys Davies.

It looked all over when Dave split the fairway with his drive, but struggled after that and a double bogey saw him leave the green tied with the other two and heading for sudden death.

A great up and down on the first, kept him in the chase and then he birdied the second to claim his second tour title lee than a year after his first.   His second will not be his last because Dave is a very determined and driven character.   A winner’s cheque for E250,000 will not turn his head as he heads closer to the world’s top 50 – his latest win taking him into the top 80 from 115th heading into Morocco.

Joost Luiten is becoming one of our most consistent players, finishing 11th while Gregory Bourdy and Jeev Milkha Singh will be boosted by top 20 finishes.

Over in America, I arrived just in time to see Louis Oosthuizen finish a very creditable 16th at the Shell Houston Open while Lee Westwood and Charl Schwartzel weren’t far behind in their final warm up before this week’s Masters.

Expect both Lee and Ernie Els to show very good form at Augusta once they get their putters working to their satisfaction again.

It’s going to be another great week among the azalea and dogwood and I won’t be the least bit surprised if one of our boys comes away wearing a green jacket.
