The chase for Ryder Cup places and FedEx Cup position intensifies this week in Scotland and New Jersey respectively.
While ISM clients Simon Dyson and Ross McGowan attempt to force their way into Europe’s team for Celtic Manor, Ernie Els and Rory McIlroy set off on the $10m dollar bounty hunt that is the US PGA Tour’s play-off finale.
Simon looked like he might be bound for Wales with an impressive showing in the Czech Republic, but came up just a little short which let Sweden’s Peter Hanson stake his claim. Ross never quite got in the hunt there, but still heads with Simon for Gleneagles this week knowing that they can become Ryder debutants.
It’s making for an exciting final qualifier and with so many world-class players outside the team limits, captain Colin Montgomerie faces a few tough decisions come Sunday evening.
Full marks to Spain’s Miguel Angel Jimenez, whose position is most under threat. He hadn’t planned to play in Scotland because of a family wedding, but will now tee-up in the hope of clinging on to his place. Those who haven’t made the team yet, but haven’t travelled to Gleneagles to try to are now at Monty’s mercy.
It could be that two or three Europeans from the world’s top 20 won’t be facing America next month. It shows just how much strength in depth we have these days. Good luck to all and particularly Simon and Ross.
Ridgewood Country Club plays host to The Barclays this week with Ernie and Rory hoping to enhance their chances of becoming the US Tour’s player of the season. Both have very good chances of not only enhancing their reputations but also their bank balance.
