Louis Oosthuizen has been forced to withdraw from the Travelers Championship after suffering a recurrence of a back injury.

The 31-year-old South African felt the problem when he hit his second shot, a four-iron, at the sixth hole of his first round at TPC River Highlands.

Oosthuizen made a par at the seventh before informing his playing partners he would be unable to continue after his eighth tee shot.

The 2010 Open champion will see a specialist near his home at West Palm Beach on Friday morning.

Louis Oosthuizen wins Volvo Golf Champions title in Durban

South Africa's Louis Oosthuizen birdied the last two holes to win the Volvo Golf Champions tournament in Durban for a second successive year.

Oosthuizen carded a four-under-par 68 to win on 12 under, one shot clear of compatriot Branden Grace (68).

Oosthuizen dropped a shot on the 10th but successive birdies on the 13th and 14th holes saw him move up to 11 under.

Meanwhile, Grace, who was playing in the group in front of his compatriot, parred the first five holes of the back nine but bogeyed the 15th to fall two shots behind.

He made amends with a 35-foot birdie putt on the 16th and then birdied the last to set the target at 11 under.

Back on the 16th Oosthuizen, who had a triple-bogey seven in round three, dropped another shot on Sunday and suddenly he was trailing.  Oosthuizen responded well though with a birdie on 17 before driving just off the green at the 18th, leaving a short chip and putt to win the tournament.

The festive break puts the players at this year’s Volvo Golf Champions on equal footing – none of the 36 elite European Tour players know exactly what kind of form they are in, and that includes defending champion Louis Oosthuizen.

“I didn’t really practice much for this week, but I think no one did. It’s a big week and hopefully we can find the game tomorrow,” he said.
